A brief profile of the : Kurdish Popular Union Party in Syria

 

 The current struggle of this Party is a historic extension of the emergence of a Kurdish political movement in Syria. The Party’s name changed for tactical reasons throughout its dispute with the authorities for political development programs related reasons. So, both, the name and program fluctuated in accordance with the democratic organizational rules and the majority’s opinion and also through establishments and conventions. The change in the Party’s name does not mean that a new one is formed. In spite of the fact that our Party has changed its name, it is still a constitutional extension of the one before it.

1- The first time the “Kurdistni Democratic Party in Syria” was appeared in 5/8/1957;

2- In 1958, the name was changed to “Kurdish Democratic Party in Syria”;

3- In 5/8/1965, -and according to the decision of the October Conference- the name changed to “The Kurdish Leftis Democratic Party in Syria”;

4- In 5/8/1980, -and according to the decision of the 5th General Conference- the name changed to “The Kurdish Popular Union Party in Syria”.

 

 The Party’s Conferences :

 

1 - The First Conference: In 5/8/1957, which is the constitutional conference in which Dr. Nuraddin Zaza (deceased) was elected President and Uthman Sabri (deseased) Secretary.

2 - The August Conference was held in August 1965 and the first political program was set in it.

3 - The Second Conference: In 20/7/1966, in which the political program was set and Uthman Sabri elected as Secretary of the Party.

4 - The General Conference was held in 15/10/1989, in which Salah Badruddinn was elected General Secretary.

5 - The Third Conference: In 20/12/1973, in which a new program as set about forming a "Patriotic Kurdish Front in Syria" and Salah Badrudding was re-elected a General Secretary of the Party, who is still in his position.

6 – The  Fourth Conference : In 10/1/1975, in which a political relation for all kurdish toward.

7 - The Fivth  Conference: In 5/8 /1980, in which a new program and a plan for building political relationships in Syria, regionally and internationality, were set. The extension of the information work specially, in Lebanon.

8 - The Sixth Conference: In 20/9/1987, the prominent achievements were the formation of a new program for the Party and putting other programs and articles towards intellectual, political and future issues.

9 - The Seventh Conference: In 15/9/1992, the remarkable achievement were designing a new struggle plan to encounter the authorities' conspiracies and chauvinist projects against Kurds.

10 - The Eighth Conference: was held in 1997 in which a new program was set and few changes in the Internal Program clauses were applied. The position "Secretary of the Central Committee" was introduced.

11 - The Ninth Conference: was held in late February 2001, in which the Internal Program items were modified, confirmation of the "Unity of the Kurdish National Kurdish Movement (in Syria) Project" and approaching the fortification and development of the Kurdish democratic alliance, and electing Salah Badrudding President of the Party.

 

The Legal Status of the Party :

 

The Party is illegal in Syria according to the Syrian legislation and laws, its activities are clandestine, the reason for which the Party's leaders and members are paused and detained constantly. For example, the Party's first secretary, Dr. Nuraddin Zaz was imprisoned several times and was denied his civil rights, the ex-secretary, Uthman Sabri was imprisoned for more than twelve times, stayed for long years in Syria jails and them exiled to "Madaghashkar". The present Secretary General, Salah Badruddin, was imprisoned denied his civil rights and he is still wanted.

Since the Party's formation and up to today, more than twelve thousand (12,000) Kurds have been imprisoned for political and Party-related reasons. For these two principle reason in addition to national ones, more than fifty eight thousand (58,000) Kurds have been imprisoned interrogated. For the same reasons seventeen (17) Kurds were denied civil rights and one hundred and eighty thousand (180,000) Kurds were denied the Syrian citizenship and -again for the same reasons- some two hundred and six thousand (206,000) Kurds were umemployed or fired from their jobs.

 

Some of the Party's Objectives:

 

1 - Lifting the national prosecution and racial discrimination against the Kurds and freeing all political prisoners.

2 - The principle recognition of tranting self-determination rights to the Syrian Kurds, numbering 2.5 million [equivalent to 15% of the total population of Syria] and gaining their political, social and cultural rights.

3 - Establishment of democracy in Syria as whole, respect to human rights, freeing political prisoners, provision of personal liberties and ending martial laws in the Kurdish areas.

4 - Conducting democratic elections under international supervision, preparing a referendum regarding the destiny of the Kurds and the formation of a new constitution allowing multinational, cultural and political rights.

5 - Freeing the economy and maintaining the rights of the poor segments of the society.

6 - The recognition of self-determination right to the Kurds of Turkey, Iran and Iraq and solidarity with their strife.

7 - Syria to possess a peaceful role in the Middle East and not to intervene in other countries affairs, in particular Lebanon and Palestine.

8 - The essential pattern of the Party's struggle is political, popular ant democratic work.

 

The Abroad Organization:

 

Outside Syria, there is one organization working among the Syrian Kurds in (Europe, USA and Australia). In addition to its political and organizational duties, it conducts cultural and social activities concerning human rights issues and Kurdish women's right. It holds its annual conference every year with steering committee positioned in Prague -the Czech Republic. The organization also publishes a periodic magazine in Arabic and Kurdish, the magazine's origin is "HAVGIRTIN".
